Water damage can happen at any point, and you might not be expecting it either. One of the worst things about water damage is that there are many places where it could come from. The weather is one of the main reasons for water damage, but there could also be problems with your bathroom, shower and toilet that cause damage to your home. In order to prevent water damage in your home, here are some things that you can do.

Prevent Water Damage

1. Look after the roof

When it there is any rain, hail or snow, the first thing it will hit in your roof. If you have a roof which isn’t very well maintained, you’re much more likely to suffer the consequences of water seeping in. Loose tiles, cracked tiles and poor installation of air vent or chimney will all add to the damage that water can cause. Since the roof is so high up on your house, it’s not something that homeowners check on a regular basis. It’s definitely worth hiring an expert from a company such as firstcall24-7.com to come and check the roof out for you every now and then, just to ensure that everything is intact.

2. Check the windows regularly

This is something that you can do quite easily by walking around your house. Water also hits the window frames of your home when it rains, and because these are often made of wood, they are likely to rot with water and become weaker. This can cause water to make its way into your house through the window frames and cause water damage. While this is also a small amount of water damage, it can be prevented by checking the windows on a regular basis and replacing the seals when necessary.

Home Water Damage

3. Monitor the humidity

The relative humidity in your home should be kept under or around 55%. If you don’t have a metre already which can measure this, it’s highly recommended that you purchase one as soon as possible. A portable dehumidifier is a very useful appliance to have, and since it’s portable, you can move it from one room to another depending on where it needs to be. Even if the weather isn’t bad outside, not looking after your home from the inside can promote mould growth and water damage.

4. Look for leaks and cracks

The main places where you’ll find leaks and cracks are in the bathroom, in the kitchen around the sink or other appliances such as washing machines and on the ceilings of your home. Look particularly around the windows since you’ll notice leaks if any water has seeped in through the frames.
