Don’t Let Storm Damage Ruin Your Home!

We’re well into the summer now, and the weather’s starting to look gorgeous. Obviously though, this can’t last forever! When autumn rolls around, many of us are going have our homes battered by a lot of extreme weather. Perhaps you’ve forked out for repairs enough, and you don’t want to go through the trouble this year. Fortunately, there are a number of ways you can protect yourself from storm damage. Here are just a few.

Weather Damage

If you live somewhere that sees a lot of snow, then you’re likely to have a problem with ice dams. Ice dams are the result of the heat from your home melting snow at the top of the roof, which drips down to the edges and re-freezes as icicles. For some people, these are close to harmless, and provide a pretty little touch to the views from their windows. After enough ice damming though, you could start seeing serious damage to your roof, and water leaking into the house. Even if you’ve never had problems in the past, ice dams aren’t something you should be neglecting. If you notice it, call a roofing company right away.

Damaged for Heavy Rainfall

Perhaps snow isn’t your main concern. Depending on your area, the main damage to your home could be from flooding. I know several people who have work their fingers to the bone on their gardens. Then, they have them completely destroyed by a sudden, heavy rainfall! The best solution I can offer is costly, but certainly effective at protecting your home from further damage! Many companies out there now provide stormwater management to both commercial and domestic properties. This involves laying down an artificial base to your garden, and spreading turf over it. The materials used are designed to stop flooding from completely warping the surface of the lawn. If you’re sick of your garden being drowned every year, then this measure is certainly something to consider.

Finally, if your home is bound to freeze over, consider buying a generator. When the winter hits some areas, all the houses sustain frozen pipes, snow damming and the like. If this sounds all too familiar, then a generator could be just the thing you’re looking for. Your standby generator will make storms more comfortable for you, as you can turn on the power when the rest of the street goes into a blackout. There’s an additional advantage here though. When the electricity in your house remains on, the entire building will be warmer. This will provide a great defence against all the winter-related problems you might be facing. If you want to save some money on it, then opt for a portable generator instead. Just make sure you place this in a well-ventilated part of the house. Many portable generators give off carbon monoxide; something you really don’t want to trap in your home!

I hope these tips help to see you through your next bout of stormy weather. Extreme weather damage can be hugely frustrating. However, taking precautions now will make the stormy season so much easier.
